|BEST TIME TO GO:||Wildlife viewing in Botswana is good all year round however each season offers its own unique highlights and the answer to this question depends on what you would like to experience.
Rainy season: January-March: Excellent bird viewing, spectacular thunderstorms & dramatic skies, excellent photography, peak flowering time. Fruiting Marula trees attract bull Elephants.
Winter: May – August: Early May the floodwaters from the Angolan highlands should reach the top of the Okavango panhandle, the rain is over and the nights are cooler. Seasonal pans begin to dry up and buffalo begin to gather in large herds along the rivers, breeding elephants increase in density as they visit permanent waters. Colours of the bush are changing to duller dry-season colours in favour of predators as they start to blend in. In June African Wild Dogs begin to search for dens which make them easier to find. Pans are drying up and wildlife begins to congregate around permanent water sources including predators. General game viewing appears to increase daily. By July visibility is excellent and so is the game viewing. July is a special time of year and mokoro and boat trips become more exciting. The winter months offer excellent opportunities for photography with soft early morning and evening light. August is peak visitor month in Botswana.
Summer: September – April: By September the climate is changing with daytime temperatures increasing to 30 degrees Celsius. Game viewing is excellent and elephants and buffalo concentrate in greater numbers keeping the predators busy. It is a time of plenty for the Lions. Colours explode as Carmine Bee-eaters return for summer. October is very hot, but offers excellent game viewing. Herbivores are at their weakest due to lack of food and Lions are at their strongest.
